Epitalon
Epitalon (Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide based on the natural peptide epithalamin, produced by the pineal gland. It has been studied in animal models and cell cultures for its effects on telomerase activity and cellular aging processes.
Molecular Information
Research Summary
Epitalon is derived from the research of Russian scientist Professor Vladimir Khavinson, who studied pineal gland peptides for decades. The peptide has been investigated in cell culture systems for its ability to activate telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length in dividing cells. In animal models, research has demonstrated effects on lifespan extension, melatonin production, and cellular senescence markers. Epitalon represents a key compound in the study of peptide-mediated telomere biology and aging processes.
Mechanism of Action
Epitalon activates telomerase (the enzyme responsible for adding telomeric repeats to chromosome ends) in human somatic cell cultures. It modulates pineal gland melatonin production in animal models, influences antioxidant enzyme expression, and has demonstrated effects on chromatin condensation and gene expression patterns associated with cellular aging in in-vitro systems.
